A new sound. A new decade. The same fearless Bowie.

On this day in music history 23rd April 1983

On this day in history David Bowie began a three-week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with the global smash Let's Dance a record that would redefine his sound and take him to an entirely new level of worldwide fame.

Teaming up with super-producer Nile Rodgers of Chic, Bowie embraced a slick, dance-driven style that fused funk, pop, and rock into something irresistibly fresh. The album’s title track, Let's Dance, became a No.1 single on both sides of the Atlantic, while tracks like China Girl introduced his music to a whole new MTV generation.

With its polished production, infectious grooves, and bold visuals, Let’s Dance wasn’t just a hit it was a cultural reset. Bowie, already a chameleon of the 70s, once again reinvented himself for the 80s, proving he could dominate both artistically and commercially.

The album also featured the fiery guitar work of Stevie Ray Vaughan, adding a blues edge to its glossy sound and helping create one of the most distinctive records of the decade.
