On this day in music history 17th April 1993

On this day in history, David Bowie made a triumphant return to the top of the charts, scoring a UK No.1 album with Black Tie White Noise.
This was a hugely significant moment in Bowie’s career. It marked his first solo album of the 1990s, following his time fronting the hard-edged rock outfit Tin Machine a period where he deliberately stepped away from superstardom to rediscover his creative edge.
Recorded in the early ’90s and infused with elements of jazz, soul, electronic music, and even wedding-day emotion (inspired by his marriage to Iman), Black Tie White Noise showed Bowie once again doing what he did best, reinventing himself. Tracks like “Jump They Say” reflected personal themes and modern anxieties, proving Bowie was still pushing boundaries well into a new decade.
The album didn’t just top the charts it re-established Bowie as a vital, forward-thinking artist in a rapidly changing musical landscape.
