On this day in Music History 6th October 1972.

On this day in Music History, David Bowie recorded “The Jean Genie” at RCA Studios in New York City, creating one of the most recognisable songs of his extraordinary career.

The energetic, blues-influenced track became the lead single from David Bowie's 1973 album Aladdin Sane and introduced another unforgettable character into Bowie's ever-expanding musical universe.

“The Jean Genie” was released in November 1972 and became a major UK hit, spending 13 weeks on the UK Singles Chart and reaching No.2.

It was another huge success for Bowie during one of the most important and creative periods of his career.

The Rise of Ziggy Stardust

When Bowie recorded “The Jean Genie”, he was still riding the enormous success of his Ziggy Stardust persona.

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars had been released in June 1972 and transformed Bowie from cult artist into international rock star.

Ziggy Stardust gave Bowie the freedom to combine rock music, theatre, fashion, science fiction and performance art into something completely new.

But Bowie was already looking beyond Ziggy.

The songs that would become Aladdin Sane were written during Bowie's 1972 American tour, and the album reflected the influence of his experiences travelling across the United States.

The title itself was a play on the phrase “A Lad Insane”, while the album's iconic cover image – featuring the famous lightning bolt across Bowie's face – would become one of the most recognisable images in rock music history.

Who Was The Jean Genie?

“The Jean Genie” was built around a hard-driving guitar riff and a swaggering rock & roll groove.

The song's title and character have been the subject of much discussion, but Bowie himself acknowledged the influence of American culture and writers on the song.

The track also featured Mick Ronson on guitar, whose powerful playing helped give the recording its distinctive glam-rock sound.

Ronson's guitar work, combined with Bowie's vocals and the rhythm section, created a rawer, more immediate sound than some of the more theatrical material associated with Ziggy Stardust.

The result was one of Bowie's most enduring rock songs.

David Bowie and London

Although “The Jean Genie” was recorded in New York, London remained central to David Bowie's story.

From his early years as David Robert Jones to Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, the Thin White Duke and beyond, Bowie's career is inseparable from the city.

London was where Bowie developed his artistic identity, found his audience and created many of the characters that would make him one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

Soho, Carnaby Street, the West End and surrounding areas all played important roles in the story of Bowie's London.

His famous Ziggy Stardust album cover photograph was taken on Heddon Street, just off Regent Street, while Bowie also had important connections with London's recording studios, music venues, fashion scene and creative community.
