Elton John’s “Are You Ready for Love?” Reaches No. 1 🍾
On this day in Music history 31 August 2002

On this day in music history, Elton John returned to the top of the UK singles chart with “Are You Ready for Love?” more than 25 years after the song was originally recorded. The uplifting track had first been recorded in 1977 during sessions for Elton John’s The Thom Bell Sessions. Although released as a single in 1979, it had never achieved the huge chart success that would come decades later.
Everything changed in 2003. The song was given a fresh lease of life after featuring prominently in a memorable Sky Sports advertising campaign promoting the new football season. The feel-good combination of Elton’s unmistakable voice and the song’s infectious Philadelphia soul influence captured the public imagination.
A new remix helped propel the track into the charts, and on 31 August 2003, “Are You Ready for Love?” reached No. 1 in the UK, giving Elton John another chart-topping single and introducing the song to an entirely new generation.
From 1970s Soul to a 21st-Century Hit
The story of “Are You Ready for Love?” is a perfect example of how great songs can sometimes find their audience years after they are recorded.
The original sessions brought Elton together with legendary American producer Thom Bell, whose Philadelphia soul sound had influenced artists including The Delfonics and The Stylistics. The result was a soulful, uplifting recording that was very different from some of Elton’s more familiar piano-led hits.
Its 2003 revival proved that a song doesn't necessarily have an expiry date.
More than two decades after the original recording, a clever remix, memorable television advertising and a new generation of listeners transformed “Are You Ready for Love?” into one of Elton John’s most unexpected UK chart successes.
