On This Day – 15th November 1932

On this day in 1932, Britain welcomed one of its most enduring stars: Petula Clark singer, actress, composer, global icon, and (as I like to mention proudly) my birthday twin. Today she turns 93 years young and her career remains one of the most remarkable in British music history.
Clark rose to prominence long before the “swinging” era took hold, becoming a familiar voice on wartime radio before transitioning into chart success. She scored two UK No.1 singles:🎶 “Sailor” in 1961🎶 “This Is My Song” in 1967 written specially for her by none other than Charlie Chaplin.
But it was “Downtown” that turned her into a truly international star. Released in 1964, the track exploded in America, reaching No.1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, making her the first UK female artist ever to top the US charts an extraordinary achievement during the height of the British Invasion. Ironically, it peaked at only No.2 in the UK, proving that sometimes you have to travel abroad to become a legend.
In the United States, she was affectionately hailed as “The First Lady of the British Invasion”, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the biggest names of the era and paving the way for generations of British female artists.
Join me on my Rock & Roll Tour of Soho as we step inside the musical world she once dominated. We’ll visit the iconic Soho venue where Petula Clark performed many of her forty UK chart singles, and explore the streets that helped shape London’s vibrant pop history.
A perfect stop on a perfect birthday tribute.
