On this day in Music History 15 October 1966

On this day in Music History legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix signed his first recording contract with PPX Productions, a deal that would lead to years of legal disputes over his early recordings. Although Hendrix was still establishing himself in the music industry, he was on the path to becoming one of the most influential guitarists in rock history.

Jimi Hendrix’s First Recording Contract

Before Jimi Hendrix became an international rock superstar, he was a talented but relatively unknown musician working to establish his reputation. Born Johnny Allen Hendrix in Seattle, Washington, in 1942, he had spent years performing in backing bands and developing the extraordinary guitar skills that would eventually revolutionise popular music.

On 15 October 1965, Hendrix signed a three-year recording agreement with PPX Productions, a company associated with producer Ed Chalpin. The contract reportedly paid Hendrix just one dollar, together with one per cent of royalties on his recordings.

What appeared to be an opportunity for an aspiring musician would later become a significant complication in his career. As Hendrix achieved worldwide success, disputes surrounding the agreement and the rights to his early recordings resulted in lengthy legal battles.

At the time, Hendrix could hardly have imagined the extraordinary impact he would soon have on rock music. His innovative guitar playing, explosive performances and experimental approach to sound would help redefine the possibilities of the electric guitar.

From Session Musician to Rock Guitar Revolutionary

During the early 1960s, Hendrix worked as a backing guitarist for various musicians, gradually refining his distinctive playing style. His combination of blues, soul, rhythm and blues, and experimental electric guitar techniques set him apart from many of his contemporaries.

His fortunes changed dramatically in 1966 when he travelled to England, encouraged by former Animals bassist Chas Chandler, who recognised his remarkable potential.

London became the launching pad for Hendrix's international career. Chandler helped assemble The Jimi Hendrix Experience, featuring bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell. The trio quickly attracted attention for their explosive live performances and groundbreaking sound.

Hendrix soon became a sensation on the British music scene, impressing musicians and audiences with his extraordinary technique, stage presence and fearless experimentation. His performances challenged conventional ideas about what a rock guitarist could achieve.

The release of singles such as Hey Joe, Purple Haze and The Wind Cries Mary, followed by the landmark album Are You Experienced in 1967, established Hendrix as a major force in modern music.

Jimi Hendrix and London's Rock and Roll History

London played a crucial role in Jimi Hendrix's rise to fame. The city's vibrant music scene during the mid-1960s brought together blues musicians, emerging rock bands, fashion innovators and music-industry figures, creating the perfect environment for his extraordinary talent to flourish.

Hendrix became part of a musical revolution that transformed London's clubs and concert venues into important meeting places for some of the era's most influential artists.

His time in London also connected him with musicians who recognised his genius, helping establish his reputation on both sides of the Atlantic. His innovative use of feedback, distortion and effects pedals would influence generations of guitarists, from hard rock and heavy metal performers to psychedelic and experimental musicians.

Although his life was tragically cut short in 1970, Jimi Hendrix's musical legacy remains immense. He continues to be celebrated as one of the greatest electric guitarists of all time, and his recordings remain essential listening for rock music fans around the world.
