Keith Richards, Chaos & Consequences

On this day in history 12 Jan 1977

On this day in rock history Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards was fined £750 (around $1,275) after cocaine was found in his car following a road traffic accident. The incident added yet another chapter to Richards’ growing reputation as rock music’s ultimate outlaw a man who lived as hard as he played.

By this point, the Rolling Stones were already notorious for their brushes with the law, excess, and controversy. Richards’ collision with authority only fuelled his legend, reinforcing the image of a band that stood defiantly outside the rules of polite society. While others chased respectability, the Stones leaned into danger, rebellion, and raw authenticity qualities that defined rock ’n’ roll itself.

Moments like this remind us that rock history isn’t just written in recording studios and concert halls. It spills out onto the streets, into police reports, late-night headlines, and smoky back rooms the real-world drama behind the music we still love today.

London, especially Soho, has witnessed countless stories like this: near-misses, infamous arrests, secret gigs, wild nights, and legendary characters who pushed music — and themselves to the limit.
