Led Zeppelin Make Their Live Debut As The New Yardbirds 🎶
On This Day in Music History 7 September 1968

On this day in music history, Led Zeppelin played their first ever concert although they weren't called Led Zeppelin yet! At the Gladsaxe Teen Club in Denmark, four musicians who would go on to change the sound of rock music forever stepped onto a makeshift stage inside a school gymnasium.
Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham were performing as The New Yardbirds, continuing the legacy of Page's former band, The Yardbirds.nAround 1,200 young fans watched as the newly assembled group tore through a powerful set that included early versions of songs such as “Dazed and Confused” and “Communication Breakdown.”
It was the beginning of one of the greatest stories in rock history.
From The New Yardbirds to Led Zeppelin
The group had come together following the break-up of The Yardbirds. Guitarist Jimmy Page was determined to keep the band's musical legacy alive and recruited vocalist Robert Plant, drummer John Bonham and bassist John Paul Jones. The chemistry was immediate.
Their first Scandinavian shows gave the musicians the opportunity to test their new sound in front of an audience a mixture of blues, hard rock, psychedelia and sheer volume that would soon become their trademark.
But there was still one problem: the name.
Following the Scandinavian dates, the band returned to London and spent just nine days recording and mixing their debut album, with much of the material developed from the live set they had been performing. The album was recorded remarkably quickly, capturing the raw energy of the band's early performances.
Soon afterwards, the group adopted a new name: Led Zeppelin.
“Like a Lead Balloon”?
The name itself has one of rock's most famous stories.
It has often been reported that Keith Moon of The Who had previously joked that a proposed group featuring Jimmy Page would go down like a “lead balloon.” The phrase became part of the mythology surrounding the band's eventual name.
Whether every detail of the story is completely accurate or not, the irony is fantastic.
The band that supposedly might sink like a lead balloon went on to become one of the biggest and most influential rock bands of all time.
With albums such as Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin II, Led Zeppelin IV and Physical Graffiti, the group helped define the sound of hard rock and heavy rock in the 1970s. Songs including “Whole Lotta Love,” “Black Dog,” “Rock and Roll,” “Stairway to Heaven” and “Kashmir” became enduring rock classics.
Led Zeppelin and London’s Rock & Roll History
Although their first concert took place in Denmark, London was crucial to Led Zeppelin's story. Jimmy Page had already established himself as one of Britain's most respected session guitarists, while London's clubs, studios and musicians provided the environment in which the British blues and rock revolution flourished.
