On this day in 1997, an extraordinary line-up of global music icons came together to re-record Lou Reed’s haunting 1972 classic “Perfect Day.” It was one of those rare cultural moments when genres, generations, and legends collided for a single cause.

The star-studded ensemble included Lou Reed, Elton John, David Bowie, Tammy Wynette, Joan Armatrading, and many more world-class artists, each lending their unmistakable voice to a song already steeped in rock history.

Released in support of the BBC’s Children in Need charity, the single debuted at No.1 on the UK charts, holding the top spot and ultimately raising over £2 million for the appeal a testament to the song’s timeless power and the generosity of the artists involved.

Join me on my Rock & Roll Tour of Soho as we visit the legendary Soho studio where David Bowie and Mick Ronson produced Lou Reed’s masterpiece Transformer — the very album on which “Perfect Day” first appeared. Stand in the same creative space where Reed, Bowie, and Ronson shaped a track that would echo across decades and inspire this unforgettable 1997 collaboration.
