On this day in history Rock music lost one of its true originals when John Entwistle legendary bassist with The Who, died suddenly in Las Vegas at the age of 57, just one day before the band were due to begin their 2002 US tour.

Nicknamed "The Ox"for his unshakable stage presence and thunderous bass playing, Entwistle revolutionised the role of the bass guitar. His intricate, melodic style helped shape classics such as "My Generation", "Baba O'Riley", "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "Pinball Wizard", influencing generations of musicians who followed.

Entwistle died in his room at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The Clark County Coroner ruled that he suffered a heart attack, with cocaine use listed as a contributing factor. His passing marked the end of an era for one of Britain's greatest rock bands, but his extraordinary musical legacy continues to inspire fans more than two decades later.
