"Sultans of Swing" goes global 🎶

On this day in musical history 19th May 1978

On this day in musical history British rock band Dire Straits released their debut single “Sultans of Swing” a song that would go on to define an era and launch one of the most distinctive sounds in rock music.

Originally recorded as a ÂŁ125 low-budget demo in the summer of 1977, the track began attracting attention after being played on London radio by influential DJ Charlie Gillett. Its laid-back groove, razor-sharp guitar work and storytelling lyrics immediately stood out from the punk explosion dominating Britain at the time.

Fronted by the effortlessly cool Mark Knopfler, the band soon secured a record deal and re-recorded the song for their self-titled debut album. “Sultans of Swing” became a worldwide hit reaching the Top 10 in the UK and Australia and climbing into the Top 5 in the US, Canada and South Africa.

More than four decades later, Knopfler’s iconic guitar solo still ranks as one of the greatest in rock history 🎸🔥
