On this day in Musical History 4 October 1970

This day in Musical History is forever etched into rock music history. On this day, Janis Joplin, one of the most powerful and distinctive voices of the 1960s, died aged just 27.

Her death added another legendary name to what would become known as The 27 Club – the group of famous musicians who died at the age of 27.

For rock music fans, The 27 Club remains one of the most fascinating and tragic chapters in music history. From blues pioneer Robert Johnson to Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse, these artists left an extraordinary musical legacy despite their tragically short lives.

Janis Joplin – The Queen of Psychedelic Soul

When Janis Joplin died she was in Los Angeles recording what would become her final album, Pearl.

Joplin died from an accidental heroin overdose at the age of 27. Her career had lasted only a few years, but she had already become one of the most influential female rock singers of all time.

As lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company, she became famous for her raw, blues-inspired vocals and unforgettable live performances.

Songs such as “Piece of My Heart”, “Ball and Chain” and “Summertime” showcased a voice that could move from vulnerability to sheer power within seconds.

Her posthumously released album Pearl became her biggest commercial success and included “Me and Bobby McGee”, which became her only US No.1 single.

Janis Joplin may have died at 27, but her influence on rock, blues, soul and female artists continues to this day.

Who Were the 27 Club?

Janis Joplin wasn't alone.

Robert Johnson

Blues legend Robert Johnson died in 1938 aged 27. His mysterious life and groundbreaking guitar playing would later influence generations of rock musicians, including The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and Led Zeppelin.

Brian Jones

Brian Jones, founder and original guitarist of The Rolling Stones, died in July 1969 at the age of 27.

Jones was instrumental in the band's early development and helped establish The Rolling Stones as one of Britain's most important blues and rock groups.

Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix died in London on 18 September 1970, aged 27.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest electric guitarists in music history, Hendrix revolutionised rock guitar with The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

London was central to his story. After arriving in England in 1966, Hendrix quickly became part of the capital's thriving music scene, performing with and alongside some of Britain's biggest names.

His London story is one of the many fascinating chapters of rock history explored on my Magical Music Tours Rock & Roll Tour of Soho.

His poetry, stage presence and uncompromising performances made him one of rock's most iconic frontmen.

In 1994, Kurt Cobain, the frontman of Nirvana, became another hugely influential musician to die at 27.

Cobain's music helped define the grunge movement and changed the direction of alternative rock during the early 1990s.

Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse died in London on 23 July 2011, aged 27.

Her extraordinary voice and unique blend of soul, jazz, R&B and pop made her one of Britain's most celebrated modern singers.

Her connection to London is particularly strong, making her another important part of the city's continuing musical story.
