On This Day in Music History 28 August 2009

On this day in Music history, one of the biggest and most successful bands in British rock history came to an abrupt and dramatic end when Noel Gallagher announced he was quitting Oasis.

The band's lead guitarist, chief songwriter and creative driving force said he could no longer continue working with his younger brother and frontman, Liam Gallagher. For years, the famously volatile relationship between the Gallagher brothers had been at the heart of Oasis. Their arguments, insults and spectacular fallouts were almost as legendary as the music itself. But behind the scenes, tensions had reached breaking point. Noel later revealed that the brothers rarely spoke, did not travel together and often only saw each other when they walked on stage.

The final breaking point came in Paris, where Oasis were due to headline the Rock en Seine Festival. Just minutes before they were scheduled to perform, the show was cancelled following another backstage confrontation between Noel and Liam.

When the support act announced that Oasis would not be appearing, many fans initially thought it was a joke. But the news was very real.

Later that night, Noel released a statement that sent shockwaves through the music world:

“It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight.”

After 18 years, Oasis had come to an end.

The End of an Era for Oasis and Britpop

Formed in Manchester in 1991, Oasis became one of the defining bands of the 1990s. Led by Noel's extraordinary songwriting and Liam's unmistakable voice and swagger, they helped soundtrack the Britpop era with anthems including Live Forever, Supersonic, Wonderwall, Don't Look Back in Anger, Some Might Say, Champagne Supernova and Rock 'n' Roll Star.

Albums including Definitely Maybe and (What's the Story) Morning Glory? turned Oasis into a global phenomenon. Their legendary 1996 Knebworth concerts attracted huge audiences and confirmed their status as one of the biggest rock bands in the world.

But despite the worldwide success, the relationship between Noel and Liam remained unpredictable and on 28 August 2009, the latest Gallagher brothers' fallout proved to be the one that finally ended Oasis.

Oasis and London's Rock & Roll History
