There's a Starman waiting in the sky 🎶

On this day in music history 28th April 1972

On this day in David Bowie released Starman as a single in the UK a moment that would change everything, his and our world forever.

After the early success of Space Oddity in 1969, Bowie had struggled to land another major hit until Starman arrived and sparked the beginning of full-blown Ziggy Stardust mania.

Interestingly, the track was a late addition to the now legendary album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. It was included after RCA executive Dennis Katz heard a demo and insisted it had hit single written all over it a decision that proved absolutely spot on.

With its infectious melody, soaring chorus, and that unforgettable line “There’s a starman waiting in the sky…” the song introduced the world to Bowie’s alien rock messiah, Ziggy Stardust. Through the crackle of a radio signal, Ziggy delivers a message of hope, rebellion, and possibility to Earth’s youth, capturing the imagination of a generation.

The real turning point came with Bowie’s iconic performance on Top of the Pops in July 1972 a moment many fans still describe as life-changing. Overnight, Bowie wasn’t just an artist he was a phenomenon.
