🕷️ When Bowie built the most outrageous rock stage on Earth 🕷️

On this day in musical history 30th May 1987,

On this day in music history David Bowie launched his spectacular 87 date "Glass Spider" world tour at Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam, Holland and rock concerts would never look the same again.

At the time, the production was described as “the largest touring set ever created.” Bowie wasn’t just putting on a concert he was creating futuristic theatre on a gigantic scale.

Dominating the stadium was an enormous spider-shaped stage structure standing 60 feet high and 64 feet wide, complete with massive illuminated legs stretching over the audience. The set contained over 20,000 feet of colour-changing lighting tubing glowing from inside the spider’s limbs, creating a surreal sci-fi atmosphere worthy of Bowie’s imagination. 🕸️⚡

The production was so huge it required 43 trucks to transport a single stage set from city to city an astonishing logistical operation for the time. Audiences were treated to elaborate choreography, dancers, video projections and dramatic costume changes as Bowie performed classics including "Heroes", "Life On Mars", "Modern Love", "China Girl" and "Ziggy Stardust".

The tour followed the massive commercial success of Bowie’s "Never Let Me Down" album and showed his determination to constantly reinvent live performance. Critics were divided at the time some calling it excessive, others hailing it as visionary, but decades later the Glass Spider tour is remembered as one of the boldest and most ambitious spectacles in rock history.

Few artists could combine music, fashion, theatre and pure artistic risk quite like Bowie. He didn’t simply play concerts he created worlds. 🌟
