On this day in history to mark the 60th anniversary of the UK singles chart the Official Charts Company published a chart, which listed all 123 songs that have sold more than a million copies since it began in 1952.

🎵 Classic Million-Selling Singles (1950s–1970s)

  • Bill Haley & His Comets – "Rock Around the Clock" (1955) The rock ’n’ roll anthem that kicked off a cultural revolution.

  • The Beatles – "She Loves You" (1963) Their biggest-selling UK single — pure Beatlemania.

  • The Beatles – "I Want to Hold Your Hand" (1963) Another early Beatles classic that topped both UK and US charts.

  • Engelbert Humperdinck – "Release Me" (1967) Famously kept The Beatles’ Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields off No.1.

  • Queen – "Bohemian Rhapsody" (1975 & 1991) One of only a few songs to reach UK No.1 in two separate decades.

The biggest selling UK single at No.1 was Sir Elton John with “Candle In The Wind” and at No.3 was Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”.

Join me on my Rock & Roll tour of Soho to walk through Carnaby St where the offices of NME (New Musical Express) used to be. They were the first paper to publish a music chart on the 14th November 1952. We will also visit the recording studio where Queen recorded their first three albums in the early 1970’s and Elton recorded "Candle in the Wind".
