Bowie - Queen "Under Pressure"

On This Day 21st November 1981

On this day in 1981, David Bowie and Queen claimed the No.1 spot on the UK singles chart with their now-iconic collaboration “Under Pressure.” What began as a spontaneous jam session at Mountain Studios in Montreux where both Bowie and Queen kept homes and often recorded quickly evolved into one of the most powerful duets in rock history.

The track showcased Bowie and Freddie Mercury at their absolute peak: two extraordinary voices, blending urgency, emotion, and raw musical instinct. Amazingly, the single’s creation was largely unplanned. Both artists happened to be working in the same studio, one late-night experiment led to another, and “Under Pressure” was born almost by accident.

The song became Bowie’s third UK No.1 single  and notably his first major recorded collaboration with another artist. He would later follow it with another superstar pairing: his 1985 duet with Mick Jagger, “Dancing in the Street,” which became his fourth UK No.1.

Join me on my David Bowie “Golden Years” Tour, where we explore the places that shaped Bowie’s life and legacy. We’ll visit the Soho recording studio where Bowie and Queen crafted numerous albums throughout the 1970s, stand on Heddon Street, where “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” album cover was shot, and travel to Brixton to see where David Jones was born. Along the way, we’ll uncover the Soho haunts, venues, and creative corners that fuelled Bowie’s constant reinvention.

Step into the world that shaped a legend and the music that continues to inspire generations.
