Chart domination with "every breath you take" 🎶

On this day in musical history 4th June 1983,

On this day in music history The Police scored their fifth and final UK No.1 single with the haunting classic “Every Breath You Take.”

Written by Sting during a turbulent period in his personal life, the song became one of the biggest hits of the decade topping the UK charts and giving The Police their only No.1 single in the United States, where it remained at the top for an incredible eight weeks.

Although often mistaken for a romantic love song, Sting later revealed the track was far darker in tone describing it as being about obsession, control and surveillance. Its chilling lyrics, combined with Andy Summers’ unforgettable guitar riff and Stewart Copeland’s restrained drumming, created a song that was both beautiful and deeply unsettling.

Released on the band’s final studio album Synchronicity, the single became a global phenomenon, winning both Grammy and Ivor Novello awards and selling millions worldwide. Decades later, it remains one of the most played songs in radio history and continues to generate huge royalties.

Ironically, while the song dominated charts around the world, tensions inside the band were reaching breaking point. Behind the scenes, relationships between Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland had become increasingly strained during the recording of Synchronicity. Soon after their massive world tour, the band would effectively split at the height of their fame.

From smoky London clubs to worldwide superstardom, The Police became one of Britain’s defining rock bands of the late 70s and early 80s.
