David Bowie with The Lower Third

On This Day – 19th November 1965

On this day in 1965, a teenage David Bowie  then still performing under his birth name Davy Jones stepped onto the stage of The Marquee Club in Soho with his band The Lower Third. At the time, The Marquee was the crucible of London’s live music scene, a place where rising talents fought for attention, identity, and a foothold in the industry. For Bowie, it was a vital proving ground.

This period marked the moment he began reshaping himself, breaking away from the crowded field of young British singers and searching for a name, a sound, and a persona that truly felt like his own. It was with The Lower Third that he recorded “Can’t Help Thinking About Me”, a punchy Mod-inspired single released shortly after he officially adopted the name David Bowie. The track offered the first real glimpse of his artistic ambition sharp, stylish, and brimming with the restless creativity that would soon make him a cultural phenomenon.

Join me on my David Bowie “Golden Years” Tour as we trace these early footsteps. We’ll visit the spot where David Jones first met The Lower Third, the legendary Soho venue where they performed, and the iconic locations that shaped his rise. Stand on Heddon Street, where the immortal “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” album cover was photographed; see where “Starman” and the Ziggy album were recorded; and explore the Brixton streets where David Jones was born and first went to school.
