On this day 25th November 1996

On this day in history a striking bronze statue of Freddie Mercury was unveiled in Montreux, Switzerland, honouring the legendary Queen frontman’s deep connection to the town where he spent his final years recording. Created by acclaimed sculptor Irena Sedlecka, the statue stands nearly 10 feet (3 metres) tall on the lakeside promenade, capturing Freddie in a powerful, triumphant pose overlooking Lake Geneva.
The unveiling ceremony drew a devoted crowd and was attended by his father Bomi Bulsara and opera star Montserrat Caballé, Freddie’s collaborator on the Barcelona project. Queen bandmates Brian May and Roger Taylor were also present, cementing the tribute as a poignant celebration of Mercury’s life, legacy, and enduring artistic spirit.
Join me on my rock & roll tour to walk the streets of Soho and discover its rich musical heritage and iconic landmarks. Along the way we will visit the recording studio where Queen and Freddie recorded their first three iconic albums.
