On This Day in Music History 24 July 2019
On this day in music history, Queen made music history once again when the official video for "Bohemian Rhapsody" surpassed one billion views on YouTube. The remarkable achievement made it the first music video released before the 1990s to reach the billion-view milestone, proving that one of rock's greatest songs continues to captivate audiences across generations.
More than four decades after its original release, Bohemian Rhapsody remains one of the most recognisable and celebrated songs ever recorded, with its popularity showing no signs of fading.
A Song That Changed Rock Music Forever
Released on 31 October 1975 as the lead single from Queen's landmark album A Night at the Opera, Bohemian Rhapsody defied every convention of popular music.
Written by Freddie Mercury, the song combined elements of rock, opera, ballad and hard rock into a six-minute musical masterpiece. At a time when most hit singles lasted around three minutes, many record executives believed the song was far too long to receive radio airplay.
They were wrong.
The single spent nine consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming one of the best-selling singles in British history. It returned to the top of the charts following Freddie Mercury's death in 1991 and has continued to find new audiences ever since.
The Groundbreaking Music Video
Long before MTV transformed the music industry, Queen were already pushing creative boundaries.
The promotional film for Bohemian Rhapsody, directed by Bruce Gowers, is widely regarded as one of the first modern music videos. Rather than appearing on television programmes every week to promote the single, the band created an innovative visual performance that featured dramatic lighting, pioneering video effects and the now-famous image of the four band members emerging from the darkness.
The video helped revolutionise music promotion and laid the foundations for the modern music video era.
A Billion Views... and Still Growing
When the video reached one billion YouTube views in July 2019, it highlighted the timeless appeal of Queen's music in the digital age.
The achievement also reflected the enormous success of the Oscar-winning 2018 film Bohemian Rhapsody, which introduced Freddie Mercury and Queen to a whole new generation of fans around the world.
In the same period, Bohemian Rhapsody was recognised as the most Googled song of 2018, demonstrating just how relevant the band's music remained more than 40 years after its release.
Today, the video has accumulated billions of views and continues to be discovered by new listeners every day.
