On this day 29th November 1976

On this day in history, Lancaster local council pulled the plug on a planned Sex Pistols gig at Lancaster Poly, reflecting the rising national panic surrounding the band’s explosive reputation. In an official statement, the council declared: “We don’t want that sort of filth (The Sex Pistols) in the town limits.”
It was a moment emblematic of the Pistols’ chaotic rise, as venues, councils, and institutions across the UK scrambled to shut down their shows amid fears of disorder, bad press, and the band’s uncompromising attitude. Ironically, every cancellation only amplified their notoriety and helped fuel the punk movement they were spearheading.
Walk with me on my Rock & Roll Tour of Soho and step into the heart of London’s punk history. We’ll visit the Soho flat where the Sex Pistols lived between 1975–77 during their most incendiary years, and the legendary Wardour Street music venue where they were ultimately banned from ever playing again a badge of honour in the true punk tradition.
