On this day 31st October 1969

On this day in history David Bowie played a short gig at the General Gordon Hotel in Gravesend, Kent on Halloween Night. This was one of the first few live performances after the rerelease of Bowie’s (to be hit) “Space Oddity”.

After singing "Space Oddity" acoustically and then reciting poems, Bowie was booed off stage and the venue did not book him again. It was claimed that the performance was poorly received by the audience, which were used to a more traditional pub rock band.

The pub was later demolished after a fire in 1992.
