On this day in Music History May 5, 1973

On this day in history David Bowie scored his first UK No.1 album when Aladdin Sane began a five week reign at the top of the charts.
Hot on the heels of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, this wasn’t just a follow up t was an explosion of creativity at full throttle. If Ziggy was the arrival…"Aladdin Sane" was the world takeover.
The title itself? A clever, chaotic pun "A Lad Insane” perfectly capturing Bowie’s fractured, high voltage state of mind as he navigated fame, excess, and life on the road in America.
And the music?
From the sleazy swagger of "The Jean Genie" to the futuristic romance of "Drive-In Saturday", this album pushed glam rock into darker, more experimental territory. At its core is that iconic lightning bolt cover one of the most recognisable images in music history symbolising a split persona and a mind on the edge.
It’s raw. It’s theatrical. It’s Bowie evolving in real time.
Backed by the powerhouse Spiders from Mars — including Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder and Mick Woodmansey, Bowie delivered a sound that was tighter, louder, and more dangerous than ever.
And where did this transformation begin?
London.
🎸 On my Bowie Walking Tour of Brixton and Soho, we trace the rise from David Jones to Ziggy… and into the electric chaos of "Aladdin Sane". From early gigs to iconic streets and studios, you’ll stand where these legendary moments were born.
This is where Bowie found his voice… and then blew it wide open.
👇 Is "Aladdin Sane" Bowie at his peak or just the beginning of something even bigger?
🎶 And that’s how music makes history.
