The Who Take Over The Marquee Club

On This Day: 1st December 1964

On this day in history The Who kicked off the first of 22 consecutive Tuesday-night residencies at the legendary Marquee Club in Soho, London. Each appearance earned them just £50 a night a figure that feels almost unbelievable today when you’d struggle to see The Who anywhere for less than £150/£200 a ticket.

These early Marquee shows were pivotal for the band. It was here, on this tight, sweaty stage, that their raw energy, smashed guitars, and explosive performances helped forge their reputation as one of Britain’s most exciting young acts. The Tuesday-night residency became a rite of passage for fans and musicians alike, many of whom would later recall witnessing the birth of a phenomenon.

But The Who were far from the only icons to cut their teeth at the Marquee . Over the decades, the club became a crucible for British rock, hosting a staggering roster of future legends, including:

Cream, The Yardbirds, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Genesis, David Bowie, Queen,

The Police and the first wave of British punk bands, who helped ignite a whole new musical revolution

The Marquee wasn’t just a venue it was a launchpad. A proving ground. A birthplace of movements.
