On This Day in Music History 5th March 1965

On this day in Music history, The Mannish Boys released their second single ‘I Pity The Fool’and while it might seem like a small footnote in music history, it actually captures two future legends right at the very start of their journeys.
On vocals is a 17-year-old David Bowie, still performing under his real name Davy Jones. At this point, Bowie was experimenting, searching for identity, and moving through early bands after his time with The King Bees, where he released “Liza Jane.”. He hadn’t yet found the sound, style, or persona that would later change music forever but you can already hear the ambition.
Just a few years later, he would reinvent himself completely, creating Ziggy Stardust and becoming one of the most influential artists of all time constantly evolving through personas, sounds, and eras, from glam rock to soul, Berlin electronica and beyond.
And on guitar? None other than Jimmy Page, still a teenage session player at the time. Before forming Led Zeppelin, Page was quietly shaping the sound of the 60s behind the scenes, playing on countless recordings while remaining largely unknown to the public.
So this one record is a snapshot of a moment before fame Bowie still discovering who he was, and Page still anonymous… both on the brink of greatness.
⚡️ And on my Bowie walking tour, we bring this early chapter to life…
We explore the streets of London where Bowie took his first musical steps visiting the sites tied to his earliest bands, the clubs and studios where he hustled for recognition, and the places that shaped his creativity long before the spotlight found him.
From those uncertain beginnings to global superstardom, you see just how much determination and reinvention it took for Bowie to become Bowie.
And that’s how music makes history 🎶
