The Rolling Stones Enter a New Era

By the early 1980s, The Rolling Stones had achieved almost everything imaginable.

They had sold tens of millions of records, released a string of classic albums and become the benchmark for live rock performance. Yet, after more than twenty years together, new challenges emerged.

Changing musical tastes, individual ambitions and the pressures of maintaining one of the world's biggest bands began to test relationships within the group.

Despite these obstacles, The Rolling Stones would once again prove why they were unlike any other band in rock history.

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards: Creative Tensions

Throughout the 1980s, differences emerged between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards over the band's future.

Jagger was interested in exploring contemporary sounds and pursuing solo projects, while Richards remained determined to keep The Rolling Stones active.

Their contrasting personalities had always fuelled their creative partnership, but during this period the relationship became strained.

Jagger released his first solo album, She's the Boss, in 1985, followed by Primitive Cool in 1987.

Richards responded with his acclaimed solo album Talk Is Cheap in 1988, reminding fans why he remained one of rock's greatest guitarists and songwriters.

Although newspapers predicted the band's demise, neither musician ever officially ended The Rolling Stones.

Dirty Work (1986)

Released during one of the most turbulent periods in the band's history, Dirty Work reflected the tensions within the group.

Despite difficult recording sessions, the album produced memorable tracks including:

  • One Hit (To the Body)

  • Harlem Shuffle

  • Fight

The record also featured a guest appearance by Jimmy Page, highlighting the respect The Rolling Stones commanded among fellow musicians.

Although reviews were mixed, Dirty Work demonstrated that the band still possessed enormous musical power.

Steel Wheels: The Reunion

After several years of uncertainty, fans finally received the news they had hoped for.

In 1989, The Rolling Stones reunited to record Steel Wheels.

The album became both a commercial and critical success, producing standout songs including:

  • Mixed Emotions

  • Rock and a Hard Place

  • Almost Hear You Sigh

Even more significant was the accompanying Steel Wheels World Tour.

The production redefined the scale of modern stadium concerts.

Featuring enormous stages, giant video screens, spectacular lighting and elaborate visual effects, the tour grossed hundreds of millions of dollars and set new standards for live entertainment.

Many modern stadium productions owe a debt to the innovations introduced by The Rolling Stones during this era.

The Biggest Touring Band in the World

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, The Rolling Stones became synonymous with record-breaking world tours.

Each production seemed larger than the last.

Major tours included:

  • Urban Jungle (1990)

  • Voodoo Lounge (1994–95)

  • Bridges to Babylon (1997–98)

  • No Security (1999)

  • Licks Tour (2002–03)

  • A Bigger Bang (2005–07)

The A Bigger Bang Tour became one of the highest-grossing concert tours in history, earning more than half a billion US dollars and attracting millions of fans across the globe.

At an age when many artists had retired, The Rolling Stones continued performing with remarkable energy and commitment.

Voodoo Lounge and Bridges to Babylon

The band's later studio albums demonstrated their determination to remain creatively active.

Voodoo Lounge (1994) won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album and included fan favourites such as:

  • Love Is Strong

  • You Got Me Rocking

  • Out of Tears

Bridges to Babylon (1997) embraced modern production techniques while remaining unmistakably Rolling Stones.

Songs such as Anybody Seen My Baby?, Saint of Me and Out of Control introduced the band to a younger generation without abandoning their blues roots.

Charlie Watts: The Gentleman of Rock

For nearly six decades, Charlie Watts remained the quiet heart of The Rolling Stones.

While his bandmates often attracted newspaper headlines, Charlie preferred jazz clubs, horse racing, art and family life.

His elegant drumming never relied on flashy solos.

Instead, he possessed impeccable timing, subtle swing and an instinctive understanding of what each song required.

Musicians across every genre regarded him as one of the finest drummers of his generation.

Keith Richards once remarked that Charlie "was The Rolling Stones."

Many fans agreed.

Charlie Watts' Final Chapter

In August 2021, the music world received heartbreaking news.

Charlie Watts died peacefully in a London hospital at the age of 80.

Tributes poured in from around the world.

Paul McCartney.

Elton John.

Eric Clapton.

Pete Townshend.

Bruce Springsteen.

Countless musicians praised not only his extraordinary talent but also his kindness, humility and professionalism.

His death marked the end of an era.

For the first time in nearly sixty years, The Rolling Stones would perform without Charlie behind the drum kit.

Steve Jordan Steps Behind the Kit

Before Charlie's death, he had recommended American drummer Steve Jordan as his temporary replacement while recovering from a medical procedure.

Following Charlie's passing, Jordan continued with the band's blessing.

A longtime collaborator with Keith Richards through the X-Pensive Winos, Jordan brought deep respect for Charlie's style while adding his own subtle energy.

Rather than attempting to imitate Watts, he honoured the spirit of the music.

His performances have helped The Rolling Stones continue touring while preserving the integrity of their live sound.

Sixty Years of The Rolling Stones

In 2022, The Rolling Stones celebrated an astonishing milestone.

Sixty years since their first performance at the Marquee Club.

The Sixty Tour took the band across Europe, including memorable performances in London and other major cities.

Few artists in popular music have sustained careers spanning six decades while continuing to perform at such a high level.

The tour demonstrated that age had done little to diminish Mick Jagger's extraordinary stamina or Keith Richards' unmistakable guitar playing.

Hackney Diamonds: A Remarkable Return

In 2023, The Rolling Stones surprised critics and fans alike with the release of Hackney Diamonds, their first studio album of original material in eighteen years.

The album featured appearances from an extraordinary collection of guest musicians, including:

  • Paul McCartney

  • Elton John

  • Lady Gaga

  • Stevie Wonder

It also included Charlie Watts on two tracks recorded before his death, providing a poignant reminder of his enduring contribution to the band.

Songs such as Angry, Sweet Sounds of Heaven and Mess It Up demonstrated that The Rolling Stones could still produce vibrant, contemporary rock music more than sixty years after their formation.

The album received widespread critical acclaim and topped charts around the world, proving once again that the band remained creatively relevant.

Awards, Records and Achievements

The statistics behind The Rolling Stones are extraordinary.

Over more than six decades they have:

  • Sold an estimated 250 million+ records worldwide

  • Released 24 UK studio albums

  • Achieved multiple UK and US Number One albums

  • Performed more than 2,000 concerts

  • Played to tens of millions of fans across six continents

  • Been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1989)

  • Received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award

  • Been ranked among the greatest artists of all time by numerous music publications

Perhaps even more impressive is their influence.

From hard rock and punk to Britpop and indie music, almost every major rock band of the past sixty years owes something to The Rolling Stones.

A Legacy That Continues to Grow

Few bands have remained culturally relevant for as long as The Rolling Stones.

Their music continues to appear in films, television programmes, sporting events and advertising campaigns.

New generations discover classics such as:

  • (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

  • Gimme Shelter

  • Jumpin' Jack Flash

  • Paint It, Black

  • Brown Sugar

  • Wild Horses

  • Start Me Up

  • Sympathy for the Devil

Their concerts continue to sell out around the world.

Their logo remains one of the most recognisable symbols in popular culture.

And their influence can be heard in virtually every corner of modern rock music.

Simply put, The Rolling Stones are not just one of the greatest bands in history.

They are one of the most important cultural institutions ever created by British popular music.
